Brian Harlander

President, Fertilizer

Over Brian Harlander's twenty seven-year career with the company, he has been a driving force in its transformation as a major player in the fertilizer industry.

He joined ConAgra Foods in 1987 as vice president of international. With just seven fertilizer terminals in its distribution network, Harlander pursued an aggressive growth strategy, building and acquiring terminals along the U.S. river system to enable the purchase of fertilizer from major international suppliers. By 1992, the company was one of the largest importers of fertilizer to the U.S. market with major suppliers based in the Middle East and Russia. In 1995, Harlander was named president of the fertilizer business and has continued to lead the segment’s growth as one of Gavilon’s strategic agriculture businesses. Today, Gavilon Fertilizer is the second largest distributor of specialty and bulk fertilizer with more than 80 fertilizer terminals worldwide and is one of the top three distributors in Mexico, Peru and South Africa.

Harlander serves on the executive board of The Fertilizer Institute. He also served a full term on the executive board of the Agriculture Retailers Association from 2006 until 2012. Harlander also gives back to the community as an active volunteer and generous supporter of Bethesda Academy and America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia in Savannah.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
